About the Sub-Committee:

The Environmental Sub-committee was created as a new sub-committee in 2011, growing out of the increasing interest of HHRG in the interrelationship between environmental and health issues. We recognise the fundamental dependence of human health on a healthy environment, and the danger that unmitigated climate change poses to global health. We thus aim to advocate and educate our peers on environmental issues that are of importance to human health, and to encourage our medical school to lead by example.

Goals:

  • Educate and inform our peers about environmental issues that have health implications.
  • Meet with and lobby politicians to understand our views and take action on our behalf
  • Work closely with Doctors for the Environment, Australia (DEA) and implement DEA directives within FMC/SOM.
  • Promote personal choices and changes that reduce our environmental impacts
  • Make recycling and access to fairtrade products possible in the student common room
  • Work with DEA to spread their messages to Flinders SOM, students and FMC.
  • Implement and maintain recycling programmes for the student common room
  • Advocate for better recycling at FMC
  • Investigate the potential to include the topic of climate change as a health concern in a GEMP1 or 2 PBL case
