About The Committee
The Indigenous Health sub-committee works to raise Flinders medical students’ awareness of Indigenous health issues, and to build student concern and confidence to address these issues.
We also aim to advocate for improved healthcare for Aboriginal people at FMC and more widely. We support the work of FMC’s Aboriginal Health Unit, Karpa Ngarratendi.
In March, we are holding a Close The Gap Day seminar with FURHS, featuring a local Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri performer and speaker and a public health medical officer. Students will be offered an opportunity to visit Camp Coorong to learn from local Ngarrindjeri people about their country and culture.
In collaboration with FURHS we screen interesting films and raise awareness. We coordinate student visits to remote communities including Yalata, Oak Valley, and Tjuntjuntjara with Dr Jill Benson. We are developing opportunities for students to learn about what it’s like for Aboriginal patients at FMC.
