"There is no greater threat to human health than climate change. For those of us working as doctors, its imminent threat dwarfs any survival gains due to our daily health care activity."

Dr. Hugh Montgomery, Director, Institute for Human Health and Performance, University College London

Code Green Week 2011

So What is Code Green?
Code Green is a campaign by medical students and doctors to educate, engage and inspire colleagues and the wider community to act now to prevent the worst health consequences of climate change.
This year, Code Green action in South Australia is being focussed into the week of August 1-7, and is a collaborative event between our two medical schools, at Flinders and Adelaide Universities.

Why should you care? I'm so glad you asked!
The World Health Organisation has listed climate change as the defining public health issue of this century.
Globally, climate change will cause ill health through food insecurity, extreme weather events, changing patterns of infectious diseases, decreased access to fresh water, forced migration and  conflict.
In Australia, ill health will result from heat waves, bushfires, extreme weather events, changing patterns of infectious disease, air pollution, allergies, asthma and drought related mental health problems.
Despite the varied impacts on health that climate change may cause, a large proportion of the community do not recognize climate change as a health issue, thereby delaying urgent action. Code Green seeks to address this.

Who is behind Code Green?
Code Green is a joint initiative of AMSA and Doctors for the Environment Australia.
At Flinders, it is supported by HHRG and FMSS.

HEAT Grant PDF Print E-mail
HEAT Grant

A key element of the Flinders University Health and Human Rights Group (HHRG) is to highlight areas of health inequities and provide education on ways that students and professionals can implement strategies to improve health outcomes.  The Health Equity Action Together Small Grants Scheme (HEAT) has been created to further these aims, and to promote small projects targeting improved health outcomes in communities worldwide.

The HEAT grant will endow student-run projects principled on social justice. HHRG has chosen a small grants style approach for use of fundraising dollars in order to promote grants writing experience, and to encourage serious consideration of all aspects of project implementation.

All HHRG members are eligible to apply for funding to use towards projects during their medical electives, rural community week, and research electives.
